Hi Richland,
Today is the Richland County Health Department’s Go Red day, so make sure you check out the pictures of this and other events!
So, today we’ll talk about the myths and tricks food companies play on you to make you think you’re eating healthier. If you don’t have the real 411, you might fall for one of these tricks and sabotage your heart health.
Ever heard of trans fats? There was some big controversy where lots of states and cities were banning trans fats from foods because they are really bad for you (this is NOT a myth). The trans in trans fats refers to the chemical structure of the substance. Trans fats are bad fats because your body can’t readily use it up, so it stays in your blood stream longer than a usual fat, which means that it contributes to plaque in your arteries, bigtime.
So the myth…“all foods labeled ‘0 trans fat’ are good for you”
False: just because a food doesn’t contain trans fats, the foods could still be loaded with other fats and sugars. Be careful to read the label to find out what else your foods contain.
Myth: You can eat as much as you want of foods that are labeled “healthy” or contain “healthy” components, like omega-6 fatty acids.
False: Although these foods may actually be good for you, that doesn’t mean you can eat them all day without consequence. The key here is balance. Balance your fat and carb intake with your fruit and veggie intake, and make sure you get enough fiber from things like oatmeal and apples.
Myth: If you want to lose weight, just cut carbs.
False: Well, first I’ll say read the myth above this one- it’s all about balance. Second, this myth is busted because you need carbs for energy, and like fats, there are several different kinds of carbs. A super low-carb diet may make you feel really tired and irritable (trust me, I’ve done it before). What you want to actually pay attention to are the types of carbs you’re consuming. Load up on healthy carbs like whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and limit white flour and pop.
That's all for now R.C., busy day for me. Check back tomorrow for tons more pictures!
From my heart to yours,
Red in Richland County
